This fine example features a polished double edged steel blade with partial fuller in center on each side and 16-1/2" etched panels on both sides. The right side is decorated with an American Eagle, "U.S." in a wreath, crossed cannons, and American flags. The opposite side is decorated en suite and marked "N.P. Ames/ Cutler's/ Springfield". Gilt brass hilt with boat guard, the top with a pierced heart. The knucklebow on both sides is decorated with a series of balls and the olive shaped pommel features double roped borders in the center and engraved feathers on the lower section. The capstan is decorated with stars. Silver wire wrapped grip. Complete with original black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts decorated with bands of fluting. CONDITION: Excellent. Blade retains about 98% original polish with a couple minor spots of staining near ricasso and throughout. Hilt retains approximately 85-90% original gilt finish with some minor thinning on sides of guard. Scabbard is excellent, showing a couple minor cracks, mounts retain about 98% original finish. It would be hard to find a nicer example. CORRECTION: The blade has a caduceus on one side and a shield with drums on the other, not crossed cannons.
