1861 dated high hump Richmond lock plate. The barrel markings are no longer visible due to pitting at the breech area. Stock is of the 1855 pattern, brass nose cap & lock plate escutcheons, steel US marked buttplate. Stock is cut for the Maynard tape primer. T slot on barrel. Off center "U" marking on the two rear barrel bands, front band is unmarked. It is very common on 1861 and 1862 dated Richmond guns to find a mixture of left over 1855 Harpers Ferry parts as well as Richmond made parts. The barrel was shortened to 38 - 3/8 inches at some point. The front sight is a round post screwed into the barrel with a pinched blade, made of brass and in matching patina to the gun. The rear lock screw has been repaired, the front lock screw is an incorrect replacement. The bore was opened up to .65 caliber smoothbore. The cupped ramrod was appropriately shortened. Possibly one of the guns altered to smooth bore and sold by the US Government as surplus in the 1870's. CONDITION: All metal surfaces retain a pleasing patina overall with areas of light to moderate pitting. Lock markings are nice and clear. Wood has dings and handling marks, showing wear. Bore is dirty with some light rust and pitting. Fine mechanical function. GR
