The pistol is of standard configuration, except for the addition of the automatic priming device, which appears to be original. Barrel dated 1847 on tang with US over JWH. The lock is stamped "US, IN Johnson", dated 1855. The hammer with automatic primer of highly sophisticated manufacture, indicating arsenal work. Stock with no visible inspector's cartouches, consistent with Springfield Arsenal experimental weapons. CONDITION: Barrel polished bright over old pitting. Lock stained, but with no significant pitting. Experimental automatic priming hammer polished over remnants of minor pitting. Hammer screw possibly replaced. Nipple retains considerable original blue. Brass furniture in standard configuration. Full dimension stock with minor wear at tail of lock plate. Action is excellent. Bore is fine. A rare experimental US martial pistol that would be the centerpiece of a collection of this particular model. From the Robert Sadler Collection.
