This rifle was built to specifications laid out by Tench Coxe for the 1807 Contract rifle having a plain two piece brass patchbox, a 38 inch barrel, .54 caliber chambering, a plain curly maple stock and 53 - 1/4 inch total length. Gun has octagon to round barrel with only the tip going to round (roughly 2 inches). It is not known why the barrel is turned to round, obviously done for some purpose since sight is placed behind this section. Barrel has markings that are illegible. Flint lock is marked "Dreppert" with single trigger and is concurrent with a lock that would have been used by the Lancaster, Pennsylvania contractors who made these rifles. A rare and interesting rifle not encountered everyday. CONDITION: Overall aged patina with usage and handling marks concurrent with age. Lock looks original. Wood has aged finish with no visible restoration. Mechanics are good. From the Robert Sadler Collection.
