The consignor states that this pistol was acquired from the estate of Earl Welchans who was assigned to the Army 28th Division of the AEF during the First World War and that it came with some now missing accessories. It is a standard US marked 1911 with all correct parts including the HP stamped blued barrel, type 2 beveled rear sight with U-notch, correct front sight, flat main-spring housing with lanyard loop, long smooth trigger and wide spur hammer. The left side of the frame has the JMG inspector stamp of John M Gilbert. The pony is center left on slide. Left side of frame is stamped United States Property with Model of 1911 US Army on right side of slide. The grips are standard diamond checkered walnut. The slide stop and safety are properly checkered. Pistol includes three pin base two-tone magazine with no loop. Some research in Welchans service record might add some interest. CONDITION: Overall a solid 85-90% original war-time factory blue finish but there is some age spotting on right side of slide that indicates it spent some years in a leather holster. The spotting is brown and blends nicely with the finish. The grips are excellent. The bore is sharp as is the action.
