With only 400 of the type 1 model 1817, this is the first handgun made in quantity at Springfield Armory. These later examples were made when Col. Robert Lee was the superintendent of Springfield Armory. The large and handsome pistol with round barrel, with viewed and proved marks, with eagle at left of breech, dated 1818. The bolted lock stamped SPRINGFIELD 1818 at tail, with eagle and US forward of the swan neck cock. Walnut full stock with remnants of cartouche on left flat. Steel side plate stamped T. FOY further engraved T. FOY and stamped once more T.F. CONDITION: Barrel shows minor pitting and staining. Steel mounts commensurate to barrel. Lock with crisp Springfield markings at tail and US eagle somewhat worn. Stock with minor split behind one side nail, otherwise full dimension with strong remnant cartouche. Ramrod appears to be the original, with proper slotted tip. Action works well, frizzen appears extremely stiff and pistol is likely an extremely well-done reconversion to flint. Bore is fair. With only 400 manufactured, these 1817 flintlock pistols are one of the largest and most handsome of all United States martial flintlocks.
