This fowler is fairly early with its 1-7/8" thick buttplate. The fowler has an unmarked two-stage iron barrel with brass front sight and groove cut into breech and tang. It has a flat Germanic banana lock, which is unmarked. The brass furniture includes a Berks County, Pennsylvania sideplate and a handmade triggerguard with a period repair at the back tang. The buttplate appears to be English and from a Pattern 1776 Royal Forester's Light Dragoon Carbine. There is also an oval wrist escutcheon retained by an iron nail in the center and engraved with a broken-line border. The ramrod ferrules also appear to be British military. The figured maple full-length stock is in the Berks County, Pennsylvania form. Complete with later brass-tipped hickory ramrod. CONDITION: Good, barrel retains a dark patina and lock appears to be in original flintlock configuration and retains a grey patina. Brass has been polished and has scattered marks from use; darker in protected areas. About 14" of forend have been professionally restored, otherwise good with some wear from use and scattered marks, as well as a splinter replaced forward lockplate. A very nice early flintlock fowler.
