(1954) This fine top of the line shotgun has 30" demi-bloc barrels fitted with matted ventilated rib. Makers name and address is on left ejector housing. Bottom barrel is stamped with November 1954 East German nitro proofs for 2-3/4" chambers. Coin finished double Kersten OU sidelock action features non-automatic safety, raised rib tumbler end cocking indicators, and double triggers (front articulated). Action is engraved with near full coverage very nicely cut large open shaded scroll within small scroll and geometric borders. Makers name and address are on bottom. A red gold relief inlaid pigeon is perched on branch on top lever. Lockplates are very finely engraved with game and dogs scenes; a setter contemplates a trio of ducks flushing over a marsh on left lock, with a covey of partridge scattering while one hapless member has been grabbed by a stooping hawk, on right. Steel trigger guard has matching scroll on bow. Well marbled European walnut long round knob pistol grip buttstock measures 14-3/8" over black basket weave Pachmayr pad. Point pattern checkering is at grip, and a vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching 3-piece field forend has Deeley release. Gun comes with brown vinyl case lined in light green cloth, with a partial Merkel label in lid. Case contains a pair of plastic snap caps, and specification booklet with information for gun no. "77414" and this gun, giving patterns of 71% upper and 65% lower. CONDITION: Very fine, as partially refinished, with evidence of considerable field use. Barrels retain 70-80% original blue, with fading generally, silvered around muzzles. Action retains most of its original coin finish with evidence of considerable cleaning, and softening of engraving, mostly on bottom. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish, checkering cleaned. Action is a bit loose with forend removed, but feels tight with forend installed. Bores appear to be excellent, but dirty. Ejectors are out of time. Case is very fine. MGM137.
