Lot consists of: Two US regulation 1840 pattern office's swords of standard configuration, one with regulation scabbard, one with an associated engraved brass scabbard. (A) Age patina to hilt with bright gilt in recessed or hidden areas. Etched blade with NP Ames Cutler Cabotville address at base of blade obverse. Bright etched motifs include American eagle with ribbon and stars, liberty cap on pole, Tecumseh with raised tomahawk, US, etc. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. Just some grey spotting to bright blade for last 11" to tip. A little greying to edge 7" from base of blade obverse. Etching very visible. Scabbard regulation black leather with brass mounts. Leather with good color and gilt to brass. Name "I. Swayze" cut in surface of leather scabbard lower obverse. Both mounts a little loose. (B) Unmarked 1840 officer sword. Age patina to hilt. CONDITION: Good. Blade has standard etching of floral, military and patriotic motifs, visible but obscured by blade greying. Some dark grey spots. Dark grey and shallow pitting at point. Good edge and tip. Scabbard is engraved brass with two carrying rings and stud. Engraving is floral at drag and rings. Crescent and dot border. 10-15% gold wash, the rest age darkened brass. Sword fits, but scabbard is typical of militia scabbards of the period. A good pair of the regulation US army officer swords of the Mexican War. (SR). PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M.
