Lot consists of: (A) Iron hilted cavalry saber of Starr 1808 militia cavalry pattern but with small "US" stamp reverse ricasso and no visible Starr stamp or other proofs. Reverse 'P' guard hilt, not slotted for knot, leather covered wood grip, quillon with disk terminal. Blade single edged with narrow, deep fuller along back edge, rudimentary false edge. CONDITION: Very good for the age. Iron is brown, with salt and peppering to the hilt and first 4" of blade from guard, rest of blade is smooth. US stamp readily visible. Leather on grip shows wear and cracking but is all there. (B) 1818 Starr noncommissioned officer's sword with scabbard. Standard configuration. Crisp "N. Starr / US / P / LS" stamp on blade reverse near hilt. CONDITION: Good to very good. Hilt is smooth brown. Leather shows wear and finish loss, but is all there. Blade is smooth metal with good edge and point. Steel grey in color with scattered dark grey spots and areas overall. Scabbard poor; was bent 9-3/4" from tip resulting in open crack on obverse and result fragile spot. Minor dents on reverse. One good crease as well on obverse 7" below stud. Smooth brown metal overall. A nice pair of early US swords. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
