Production on the Second Model began in 1806 and ended in 1808. For another identical example, see page 87 of "Swords and Sword Makers of the War of 1812" by Richard H. Bezdek. Curved single edged blade with two fullers. Ricasso stamped "3" on the right and on the left with a small circle. Standard 2nd Model hilt with seven rectangular piercings on guard and a birds head pommel. Grip with bulbous sections, leather wrapped and decorated with a single strand of brass wire. Complete with its original steel scabbard with stud on throat mount. CONDITION: Blade has been sharpened and retains much original polish with some scattered frosting and darker patina. A few nicks to edge. Hilt retains a grey patina with scattered areas of darker patina. Grip leather shows some minor losses on both sides. Scabbard shows some denting and a small crack on back, near throat mount. Retains about 50-60% black paint otherwise turned to brown heavy patina. A scarce Virginia cavalry saber that probably saw Confederate use later in life. DMG. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
