Lot consists of: Two regulation US Army swords. (A) Ames made and marked 1840 pattern officer's sword. The regulation side arm for US infantry officers in the Mexican War. Gilt brass hilt with foliate globular pommel and knuckleguard with central cast floral motif. Folding knuckleguard. Spadroon blade with etched floral motifs, American eagle with motto banner overhead, Ames firm name and address above palmette at base of blade. Back edge is vine etched. Reverse etched with floral scrolls and arms, central "U.S." with stars and palmette borders. CONDITION: Very good. Strong gilt to hilt. Minor rubbing to upper surfaces both counterguards. Blade with good edge and tip, but showing some greying. Obverse etching visible, but some loss of detail. Reverse etching brighter and stronger. Scabbard excellent. Minor age cracks to overall very good finish. Age patina to brass mounts. Nice Pinned leaf mount to upper frog hook has slight play. (B) 1818 pattern noncommissioned officer's sword. Nathan Starr contracted for 4,000, delivered in 1819 and 1820. Straight, single edge blade with fuller and rudimentary false edge. Iron hilt with backstrap, guard pierced for sword knot. CONDITION: Poor to fair. Blade and iron hilt show deep pitting overall, grey mixed with dark brown on blade. Hilt brown with some grey on the backstrap. "US" over "P" proofs are visible at obverse base of blade. Wood grip good. No leather wrap. (SR). PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
