Lot consists of: (A) 1832 General and Staff Officer's sword with 31" straight spear point blade with single central fuller running virtually the length of the blade. Blade is decorated with patriotic motifs including florals, stands of arms, an eagle with "E Pluribus Unum" on a ribbon in its mouth, "U.S." in a wreath. Counterguard is a separate piece from the quillons, cast and chased with dots, knucklebow en suite. Urn pommel with roped meridian and incised florals beneath. Cast wire grip. Leather scabbard with brass throat, drag, and stud. CONDITION: Good. Blade has been cleaned over some minor pitting and some darkness. Guard, grip, and pommel are very good with some evidence of use. Scabbard with craquelure to leather and two splits at the stitching, otherwise good with some minor oxidation to brass. (B) 1850 Foot Officer's sword with 29 - 1/4" blade with partial double fuller running for approximately 3/4 of the length of the blade. Etchings of various patriotic motifs with right side decorated by acanthus leaves, "E Pluribus Unum" in banner, Great Seal eagle, and stands of arms, left side with more acanthus leaves and stands of arms around an enlarged "U.S.". "W.H. Horstmann / Sons / Philadephia" on left side of ricasso, with a Solingen makers mark tucked in tightly next to the leather washer. Cast and chased guard pierced through with floral designs. Fishskin grip with unbraided copper wire wrap. Scabbard with "Horstmann / & Sons / Makers / Philada" in a soldered scroll at throat. Brass throat, locket, and drag. CONDITION: Very good. Blade is a smooth grey steel with a few areas of darkness, most noticeable towards tip. Guard has some verdigris in protected areas that could be removed with a careful cleaning. Grip with seam on left side, wire is loose but appears to be complete. Scabbard is good, with some craquelure to leather and some chipping but complete. Drag is missing retaining screw, and there is some chipping and staining. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport. EW.
