Only 1,000 of this Hussar-hilted model were made by Buel and Greenleaf and the survival rate is very low due to extended and heavy use. Buel and Greenleaf worked in Hartford, Connecticut. For an identical example, see page 76 of "Swords and Sword Makers of the War of 1812" by Richard H. Bezdek. The sword has a long, slightly curved blade with narrow partial fuller on the top of both sides. Right side of ricasso marked "US (intertwined in script) / 1799". The iron Hussar hilt has a black leather wrapped wooden grip. CONDITION: Blade retains a grey patina with scattered areas of light pitting and a few nicks to edge, markings are very good. Hilt retains a dark brown patina with some scattered pitting. Grip retains about half of original leather, which shows some flaking. A very rare and early American cavalry saber. DMG. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
