For an identical example, see plate 78 on page 82 of "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords: Volume I" by Daniel D. Hartzler. He identifies this sword as a Pennsylvania example. It probably dates to the third quarter of the 18th century or early 19th century and has a slightly curved blade with narrow single fuller along the top. The Top of the spine is stamped "W. ROSE". The hilt is sterling silver and there is a leather washer at the top of the blade. The stirrup hilt has a forward-curved quillon and pommel cap with integral silver backstrap. There is a scalloped and engraved fuller at the base of the grip, which is wrapped with braided silver wire. The sword is complete with its original and unusual silver mounted black leather scabbard decorated with geometric designs. The top mount is inscribed with a large and decorative "H", as the example shown in the book is also inscribed. The unusual drag has a rolling brass wheel at the tip. The examples shown in the above mentioned book, obviously by the same maker, also have this feature. CONDITION: Blade retains much original polish with some scattered freckling and darker patina. Hilt is unpolished and retains a dark patina. Grip retains all of its original wire wrap. Leather scabbard shows some losses to finish, but is very good overall. Mounts retain a dark patina, consistent with hilt. A wonderful, as-found American silver hilted officer's saber. DMG. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
