For another example of a sword with this scabbard, see page 78 of "Swords and Sword Makers of the War of 1812" by Richard H. Bezdek. This scabbard and sword are attributed to maker Abraham Nippes, who finished James Winner's contract. Nippes worked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and made only 478 swords. This example was probably made for Virginia state contract. The slightly curved clip point blade widens towards the tip and has a narrow single fuller along the top on both sides. The ricasso is stamped "P / W" on the left side. Iron reverse 'P' hilt with faceted knucklebow and birds head pommel with integral backstrap. Leather wrapped grip with sections separated by twisted brass wire. Complete with its original iron scabbard with applied iron mounts, throat stamped with a small circle, as can be observed on Virginia Manufactory swords. CONDITION: Blade retains a spotted grey patina with excellent markings and a couple nicks to edge. Hilt retains a heavy brown patina. Grip mostly deteriorated with some leather remaining on left side, wood grip shows a chip and age cracks. Scabbard retains a heavy brown patina with scattered areas of denting and a few areas of separation at seam. A very scarce War of 1812 sword. DMG. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
