Super condition Ames 1850 pattern foot officer's sword and scabbard. Standard, regulation pattern. Blade etching with firm name at bottom obverse. Floral motifs mixed with arms and US flag, American eagle, spread wings, with motto in foliate scroll overhead. Reverse with latticework, geometric and floral motifs, arms with US shield, block US. CONDITION: Frosted panels show very well, ending in flame points. Metal is smooth and bright with good edge and point. Hilt has strong gilt with just some rubbing to brass that has since darkened on raised edge of pommel cap and edge of counterguard. Scabbard excellent with good color and finish to leather, minor cross cracking to finish but no losses. Good gilt to mounts, just minor rubbing to brass, since darkened, on middle mount. Even the screw heads preserve their blued. A very nice example by a famous maker. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
