Lot consist of: (A) C. HAMMOND M1840 heavy cavalry/dragoon saber. Made by the Charles Hammond firm of Philadelphia, this saber has single-edged blade and a pronounced curve and flat wide back. Maker marked on the ricasso: “C. HAMMOND" with the obverse ricasso plain. CONDITION: Steel blade exhibits an overall grey finish with scattered areas of discoloration and scattered small edge nicks. Twisted wire grip is all present with some wood and leather nicked and chipped. No scabbard or leather washer. (B) M1840 cavalry saber made by Ames. Blade surface has been lightly cleaned to bright with light scattered mottling. No nicks on the edge. Ricasso is marked “US” and A.D.K.” while the reverse is marked “AMES MFG. CO. / CABOTVILLE / 1850.” Leather washer is 40%. Iron scabbard has been painted black post-war, but is original to the sword and fits perfect. Top of brass pommel is stamped twice with inspector’s initials “J.W.R.” and “A.D.K.” CONDITION: Black leather grip retains twisted wire brass wrap that is in excellent condition. Leather shows no wear and the twisted wire wrap is 100%. All brass hardware is tight. (C) M1832 Ames Artillery Short Sword. CONDITION: Blade is grey overall with some mossing, with decent date markings and very strong eagle stamp. Brass handle and guard are excellent with nice patina. (D) M1860 cavalry saber and scabbard. Ricasso is marked: "AMES MFG. CO. CHICOPEE MASS" and on the reverse: "U.S. J.H. 1861." CONDITION: Blade is cleaned to grey with overall mossing and scattered light nicks to edge. Period correct scabbard fits perfect. Original leather wrapped grip and wire wrap is 90%. BM
