West Point grey wool dress tunic and shako. The tunic with tailor's label in the neck reading "Cadet Store West Point", dated "Jan / 36" and lightly named "Legere, L.J.". Laurence J. Legere graduated from West Point in 1940, one of the first volunteers for the paratroops, he served in World War II with the 101st Airborne Division and was severely wounded in Normandy on D-Day. Legere was the jump-master on General Maxwell Taylor's lead plane and the first to jump. After the war he taught at West Point for two years, later serving in Berlin, Korea, France and Washington. In the 1950's he served as a White House defense assistant for Eisenhower and later for Kennedy. Legere's military decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His civilian awards include the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service and Distinguished Federal Civilian Service Medal. CONDITION: Very good with moderate wear to the interior of the tunic and the leather areas of the shako.
