Standard 1856 pattern with swivel ram rod. Simple folding leaf rear sight. Saddle bar on left side. "25" proofed barrel. Marked on the lock "J. HOLLIS & SONS" towards the front. Marked at the rear of the lock in a circle surrounding an intertwined stylized "H&S" marking (for Hollis & Sons) is "MAKERS TO HER MAJESTY'S/ WAR DEPARTMENT". Traces of a similar mark on the stock are present on the right side. It is known that the Confederacy imported quite a few model 1856 carbines for use in the Civil War. CONDITION: Metal retains a pleasing patina with areas of light pitting. Markings are clear. Stock has been sanded at one time. Brass has a nice dark untouched color to it. Bore has strong rifling. Fine mechanical function. GR
