Possibly 1812 period or mid-19th century, this folk art engraved powder horn has a curved 13-1/2" body and a long faceted spout followed by a relief carved ring. The flat wooden plug has a rose head nail in the center for a strap. The main body is finely engraved with a mounted officer brandishing a cocked flintlock pistol. There is also a weeping willow tree, a peacock, a design of hearts and tulips, and winged merman, all done in the style reminiscent of a fraktur. There is a small repair just below the carved ring, where a hole was covered with an applied piece of iron about the size of a dime. CONDITION: Horn retains a dark honey patina overall with some chipping around the plug with a couple small chips filled. A very attractive folk art horn with scarcely encountered officer. DMG
