John Thomson is recorded as working in London, between 1800 and 1830. Swamped barrel in three stages. First stage at breech with fluted sections, top section signed by John Thomson. Second is smooth and engraved with sprawling thistles, final with panels of stiff leaf engraving. Bolted lock with Thomson signature playfully engraved and elaborate floral engraving, sliding thumb safety, and waterproof pan. Roller bearing frizzen engraved en suite. Steel stock with inlaid silver designs of thistles and florals. Vacant silver thumb piece. Left and ride side of stock with a coat of arms depicting a lance and two spears tied together by a ribbon. Left side with belt hook. Elaborate pricker with urn and thistle design added at a later date. Ball trigger of a later date. Ramrod the original. CONDITION: Barrel cleaned over some light pitting and staining. Stock cleaned with some very minor losses to silver inlay and some scattered pitting. Top screw possibly replaced. Action is fine, bore is good with oxidation commensurate with age. Retains a grey patina overall, silver is polished. EW
