1871 vintage Model 1866 saddle ring carbine. Gunmetal brass frame and brass rifle style buttplate. Blue 20" round barrel and magazine tube. Saddle ring in place. Plain straight grain walnut stock and forearm. Bolt has been period converted to centerfire. This centerfire conversion with the traces of a cartouche on right side of butt makes it possible that this unique carbine ended up in Brazil, as they later purchased over 1000 1866 carbines in the .44 Henry Centerfire cartridge under contract in the early 1890's. CONDITION: Frame has medium mustard color patina with some rounding to edges. Barrel and magazine tube are a blue/brown patina, showing evidence of a period refinish resulting in the barrel address nearly gone. Unusual number "2" stamped on left side of barrel breech, and number "94" stamped on top left corner of frame. Faint evidence of a cartouche on right side of the stock at the heel. Bore has strong rifling with scattered pitting. Action is tight and crisp. Overall an attractive 1866 saddle ring carbine. -MKS-
