Manufactured by Winchester in 1884 during the time of great Western expansion. Winchester Model 1866 rifle with 24 - 1/4" octagon barrel and fitted with highly figured walnut stocks with straight grip and crescent butt with steel butt plate equipped with trap for cleaning rod. Profusely engraved with vignettes of Dall sheep, bison, antelope, and the bust of a Native American in full headdress. The game scenes are surrounded by scroll and vine engraving patterns with a chiseled background. Top and bottom of the gunmetal brass frame are engraved in the same pattern. Barrel is marked with standard Winchester two line address and rifle is chambered for the .44 Henry Flat rimfire cartridge. Front sight is a nickel silver sporting blade while the rear is fitted with an elevator adjustable sporting rear sight. The highly figured American walnut stocks are oil finished and are full sized. CONDITION: Very fine with traces of blue finish remaining in protected areas, balance having turned plum or patina. The period custom engraved frame is turning a pleasant chocolate patina with traces of protective lacquer remaining on belly. Buttstock has a nearly invisible crack repair at wrist and the application of additional finish is observed on both butt and forearm. Bore is modestly dark with strong rifling. Action operates properly and locks solidly. TDW
