Standard carbine with 20" round barrel, full magazine, front sight integral with barrel band and a two position rear sight missing second blade. Left side of receiver has a staple & ring. Mounted with uncheckered American walnut with straight stock and second type Henry brass crescent buttplate with trap. Serial number was observed on left side of lower tang under the wood, inside top tang channel of buttstock, and inside toe of buttplate. Receiver has features of the parent Henry rifle with its sharp radius at the top rear edge, dovetailed side plates at front & rear edges vs. later models with dovetails only at the front edges. Front flats of the receiver are without a flare at the front edges which leaves the forearm wood thin & vulnerable. Left side of lower tang is also marked with the tiny assembly numbers “1753” which are also found inside the sideplates. Bottom of receiver is marked (R.M. 125) and believed to be for Republica Mexico. CONDITION: Good overall with worn walnut stocks with material losses on forearm at barrel line. Butt stock has longitudinal crack emanating from butt towards wrist. Stock is numbered to gun in stock mortise as is buttplate numbered at heel internally. Bore is dark. No finish remains on barrel and tube and is a mottled dove grey mixed with patina. Several screws have been replaced and repaired. Butt stock screws are replacements and tang screw is incorrect. Action operates properly. An extremely rare and interesting 1st Model flatside 1866 carbine with Mexican Markings. TDW
