21" barrel. Blue finish with integral magazine. Barrel reads "New Haven Conn. Patent Feb. 14, 1854". German silver front sight. No caliber marking. Gun metal receiver with rear sight on top, adjustable for elevation by means of a knurled screw. Serial number is stamped on left upper tang. Bottom of left tang has assembly number 34 as this is found in pencil on front of stock mortise and on stamped on buttplate mortise. All stock screws are numbered 200. Straight grain varnished American walnut stock. Gun metal buttplate has assembly number stamped on inside of tang. Buttplate screws also have serial number stamped on collar. CONDITION: About fine. Barrel shows a smooth plum-brown patina overall with traces of blue toward the breech in the gullet and on magazine tube. Loading collar was not disassembled, but flats lineup perfectly. Barrel marking is sharp. Magazine follower is loose and is believed to be a period replacement made of iron. Gun metal receiver shows a mustard-brown patina overall with no evidence of heavy cleaning. Sides of receiver show some minor dents and scratches. Sideplates fit well. Receiver sight shows a generous amount of blue. Hammer is a plum-brown patina. Lever is also plum-brown patina, with some very slight trace of blue toward the hinge. Buttstock is very fine with minor bruising and generous amounts of varnish. Buttplate shows an even mustard patina, that is bright on the high points. Serial is sharp. Screw numbers are clear. A nice example of an early Volcanic carbine. This carbine serial number 200 was featured in the German Arms Collectors magazine in April of 1973 and a copy of this magazine is included. TDW
