According to Colt Archival Letters that accompany the shotgun, it was manufactured in 1889 and shipped on April 10th of that year to C.H. Colt, believed to be Caldwell Hart Colt, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Colt. The gun exhibits deluxe, presentation grade engraving featuring delicate English style scrolls. 30" 12 gauge Damascus barrels. Full figure walnut stock and forearm. Finely checkered Prince of Wales style pistol grip. Checkered forearm with ebony tip. Finely checkered panels behind the frame with fleur-de-lis. Hard rubber shotgun style buttplate with Rampant Colt motif. Case hardened frame with browned Damascus barrel. Gold oval presentation plaque on left side of stock that reads: "PRESENTED BY C.H. COLT WON BY AUGUSTUS W. MOTT MARCH 9th 1889". Brass shield shaped escutcheon on bottom of the stock, inscribed "A.W.M." Pictured on pages 486 & 487 of R.L. Wilson's 2nd edition of "THE COLT ENGRAVING BOOK" Volume One. CONDITION: Excellent overall with 95+% original brown finish on barrels. Frame is mostly a nickel patina. Traces of original blue on the locking lever and trigger guard. Bores are excellent and bright. Action is tight and crisp. Overall a very attractive presentation grade Colt shotgun from an original Colt family member. -MKS-
