Lot consists of: one US 1841 Pattern US Navy cutlass and three 1832 pattern artillery short swords, one dated 1841 with its waist belt and one with an etched blade. (A) Navy cutlass marked "USN 1843" on reverse ricasso. Obverse ricasso showing partial NP Ames and Springfield stamps, rubbed on right. Rack number 80 on underside of guard. Numbered 16 in script and 62 in punch dots on exterior of knuckle guard. CONDITION: Blade is bright with good edge and point. Light staining at ricasso. Comes with mismatched scabbard that seems to be for an 1855 saber bayonet, which shows scuffing but is solid. (B) 1832 Pattern artillery sword and scabbard. Ricasso with Weyersburg king's head stamp. Otherwise unmarked. Possibly a Horstmann import intended for a different retailer and left unmarked. (See Thillmann, US Army Swords.) In this case the blade is an unfullered 1841 style. CONDITION: Age patina to brass hilt. Blade with good edge and point. Bright with scattered gray spots, some brown at base. Hilt and scabbard mounts with traces of gilt. Minor cracking to scabbard finish, but scabbard is solid. (C) 1832 Artillery short sword with scabbard and belt. Very clear "Eagle/ NP Ames / Springfield" and "United States / 1841 / WS" blade stamps. White buff belt with interlocking round US buckle. CONDITION: Very good. Blade is bright metal with scattered gray spots, good edge and point. Scabbard excellent. Belt very good with just small split at top of frog pocket at stud hole. (D) Etched blade 1832 pattern short sword as privately purchased lodge sword. Partial "NP Ames" and "1843" stamps visible. Floral etching with partial designation visable. "... / No. 3 / Prvidence (sic) R.I." CONDITION: Fair to poor. Nicely cast hilt bearing some gilt. Corrosion on blade obscures much of the etching, but a partially visible crest on one side might make further identification possible. Several 1844 dated examples from Massachusetts lodges are known and pictured in Thillmann. A nice study collection of these weapons.
