December 10, 2019 Edged Weapon, Armor & Militaria
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/10/2019
Lot consists of two swords with original Clauberg blades, one made and etched for Tiffany and one for Shuyler, Hartley and Graham. Both with recent brass mounted steel scabbards and massive hilts. (A) Tiffany blade shows Damascus patterning at upper end. CONDITION: The gilt wash of the blade etching is rubbed and there is some graying, making the etching less distinct, but the motifs are legible. Some gray spots also near point. Scabbard mounts and hilt are massive, impressive, and modern. Scabbard bears false inscription to Colonel of 6th New York Cavalry from Harris Light cavalry. (B) Long, straight double edged spearpoint blade of 1834 style with narrow central fuller. Clauberg marked and etched for Schuyler, Hartley and Graham. Etched with floral scrolls, military and patriotic motifs including entwined US, American eagle with motto ribbon, etc. CONDITION: Gold wash shows wear at bottom, light but good in mid-section of etched panel. Upper portion of bright blade with some gray spots and some dark gray at point, but good edge and tip. Hilt is not old and sword, like the companion piece in this lot is a composite piece of old and new that would make impressive wall decoration. (SR)
