Lot consists of three 1872 pattern US officer's swords, one with presentation, one with a nice tortoise shell grip. (A) Standard configuration. Bears a blade inscribed gilt washed blade: "Presented to Col. S.M. Hedges by his old time comrade Major T.E. Sloane N.Y. Jan. 1890." US, standing soldier, patriotic motifs on reverse. CONDITION: Good. Graying to blade, wear to gold wash. Good grip and gilt to hilt and openword brass mounts of scabbard. (B) Rapier like hilt with standard obverse countguard, short counterguard reverse. Brooks, New York dealer blade etching on long ricasso. CONDITION: Very good. Blade is very good with minor graying and visible etching. Hilt has much gilt and attractive tortoise shell grips with wire binding. Blued scabbard with minor wear, some staining to gilt brass mounts. (C) Rapier style hilt, folding guard with US reverse, fixed guard with openwork eagle obverse. CONDITION: Good to very good. Subdued but visible blade etching with standard motifs but gray spots. Good gilt on hilt. Rayskin grip. Steel scabbard with overall light freckling, brown near upper brass mount. The tortoise shell gripped hilt is particularly attractive. (SR)
