American, circa 1862. Oil on fabric. Titled lower right: “Former slave/John Washington/joined Union Army/in Fredericksburg, VA 1862”. The painting depicts the disturbing image of the man posed wearing harsh symbols of slavery: an iron “Punishment Collar” around his neck with three sharp tines and leg irons with chain foot shackles. John Washington walked away from his Master’s home at the arrival of the Union forces under General Rufus King at which time he simply crossed over the Union Lines and was accepted by the Officers for whom he then worked at General King’s Headquarters. Condition: Very Good. Housed in a period simulated rosewood molded frame. CORRECTION: Probably 20th Century work by Antonio Romano.
Condition: (Very Good).
