Blade measures 34 - 1/2" with an unstopped fuller. Well marked on the guard "EMPHIS/ OVELTY WORK/ THOs LEECH & Co". The stamping is somewhat weak on the edges so therefore the "M", "N", and part of the "K" are either not present or incomplete. This is common on these swords. Typically found with a twisted wire wrapped leather handle, this sword features a single copper wire strand around oilcloth. Variations have been noted in the wrapping of the handles on these swords. No scabbard. This is a solid example of a Thomas Leech, Memphis Novelty Works produced sword made in Memphis, Tennessee prior to the fall to Union forces which required his operation be moved to Columbus, Mississippi and then to Greensboro, Georgia. CONDITION: Blade retains a pleasing patina overall with some areas of light surface rust and minor pitting. The point of the blade is dull, having worn over time. There is a slight ding in the cutting edge of the blade. Brass guard and pommel appear to have been very lightly cleaned a long time ago, still retaining a pleasing patina. Some small dings in the brass. Handle retains most of what appears to be the original oilcloth, a bit dirty and shows wear. Wire is intact and complete. GR
