This is an excellent example of a rare Confederate-altered First Model Virginia Manufactory Cavalry Saber. These swords were modified and the scabbards were replaced for Confederate Civil War use. These swords were originally manufactured between 1802 and about 1822 by the Virginia Manufactory for state use. In 1860 about 3,600 were taken out of storage and were shortened, had the hilts updated and were re-scabbarded. They were then issued to Virginia cavalry troops early in the war. Jeb Stuart's 1st Virginia Regiment was armed with this pattern at the Battle of First Manassas. The sword has a slightly curved double-fullered blade, top of spine inscribed "1, VA REGT". The hilt is a standard Virginia Manufactory style with seven-slot guard and First Model Hussar pommel and leather-wrapped grip with bulbous sections. Square nut on top of pommel. Complete with original iron and brass-mounted scabbard. CONDITION: Blade retains a grey patina with scattered grey spotting, excellent crisp markings. Hilt retains a heavy brown patina, some bending and a couple breaks to slots on guard. Grip retains most of original leather with some minor losses, wire wrap is absent. Scabbard retains a heavy brown patina with dark and unpolished brass mounts. A very rare and desirable regimentally marked Confederate saber. DMG
