Butternut, cherry and pine, and possibly basswood, circa 1840. Probably Hancock, Massachusetts. A fine example of Shaker sewing furniture with a rear drop leaf to expand the cutting surface. Unusual drawer configuration with one long drawer under the top followed by a block of small two over two drawers separated by a large square central drawer over a larger bottom drawer. All are molded, lipped and dovetailed, with cherry wood pulls. Rare, distinctive shaped apron on front and sides. Paneled sides of butternut. Square to turned cherry legs with a medial swell. Possibly Hancock, MA.
These sewing tables have been attributed to David Terry, a family elder at Hancock. Height: 28"; width: 35"; depth: 17" (closed), 23" (open).
Retaining traces of the original red finish. Top abraded. Appears to retain the original knobs.
