These smaller flags with a reduced number of stars to make them more visible were adopted in the mid-1850s for small vessels. The use of 13 stars seems to have been adopted about 1862 and the 4-3-4 configuration was standard to about 1875. 24" x 36". Handwritten "3 x 2" twice on hoist canvas hoist. Red and white bunting stripes, blue canton with separately applied machine sewn stars on each side. CONDITION: Very good. Small scattered moth nips overall. Small runs next to canvas hoist. Generally solid and very displayable with good color. Two brass grommets. These flags were replaced in 1916 with flags bearing the official number of stars on a US flag. (SR)
US NAVY BOAT FLAG.
