Comprising: (A) For a similar example, see plate 105.PA on page 218 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. Of traditional form, the head measures about 12-1/4" excluding the straps, the armor piercing blade measures about 7" in height. There are symmetrical bird wings on each side of the broad blade projecting from the base. The round mounting socket has three relief rings and has integral 8-1/2" mounting straps on each side. The associated period haft is faceted and measures about 80", for an overall length of 92-1/2". CONDITION: Head has been cleaned bright and lacquered many years ago. 1 decorative cutout is slightly bent and head shows some light scattered pitting. Haft is excellent, retaining an old, dark, dry surface. (B) Continental, probably German or French. For a nearly identical example of a German halberd, see plate 61.PA on page 209 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. The large head measures about 16-3/4" in total of hand hammered iron construction with a blade of about 7" and an unknown armorer's mark on 1 side of a cross in a circular cartouche. The socket is conical with 3 relief rings and several engraved bands measuring about 6-1/4" overall. The head has an associated 17-1/4" portion of a haft with associated separate iron straps. CONDITION: Head was cleaned many years ago and now retains a yellowed lacquered surface with scattered areas of pitting. A nice lot of early halberds. DMG
