The 68" barrel is octagonal at breech, 16 sided forward of front sight, then forward to round. Stamped on top C.L.P.; significance unknown. The lock with early English strawberry leaf engraving on flat lock, the cock engraved en suite and signed F. Smart. The walnut half stock is of club-butt form with molding. Brass mounts comprising heel plate, trigger guard, four ramrod pipes and fore end tip. Form of gun is more Italian than English; however, may be English. CONDITION: Barrel deeply patinated and uncleaned. Lock is stained but with no significant pitting. Brass furniture is clean, with little wear. Stock is in good condition, with minor marks and one longitudinal chip which does not detract. Action is excellent. Bore is good. Possibly an 18th century restock; nevertheless a unique and most attractive gun that Norm Flayderman most certainly have referred to as "a showstopper."
