Is this an unknown Colt Model 1849 Pocket with a 6-shot rebated cylinder, or a Model 1862 Pocket "Navy" chambered in .31 caliber? Or, perhaps, a "lunch box gun" built by an ingenious 1800 era Colt employee? The general consensus being it is a unique Model 1862 Pocket "Navy" chambered in .31 caliber. One thing for certain, it is an anomaly that has intrigued other well known Colt collectors including William M. Locke, who purchased this gun in 1960 from E. Dixon Larson. Accompanying the gun is a letter dated April 7, 1960 documenting the transaction. This unique revolver serial number 6482, has a 6-inch barrel (actually measures 5 - 7/8") 6-shot .31 caliber rebated cylinder. One-piece burl walnut grips. Engraved in the Gustave Young tradition with foliate scrolls and punch dot background. Roll die cylinder with Stagecoach hold-up scene. Matching serial number 26482 on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and cylinder. Barrel wedge is marked 5870. No serial number on backstrap. Housed in a partition fitted walnut case with purple interior. Accessories include a two cavity bullet mold marked "Colt's Patent" and "Eagle" powder flask marked "Colt's Patent" and two each cap tins. CONDITION: Very good overall. Spurious areas of silver plate and gold wash. No original finishes remaining. Hammer and loading lever have been polished to bare metal. Very strong roll die scene on cylinder. Possible replacement grips showing no original finish with minimum wear to the wood. Spurious serial numbers. Case is good overall, exterior shows heavy use with scattered dents an scratches to lid. Has carpet like material glued to bottom. Accessories show no original finish with scattered corrosion. -MKS-
