The Model 1880 triangular rod bayonet rifle was Springfield's first attempt at producing a trapdoor rifle with a combination cleaning rod and bayonet Serial number is right in middle of proper 154000-158000 range. Only 1,001 of this model were produced. Correct 1873 dated breech block. Undated lock. Trap in butt containing a "MODEL 1879" marked tool and broken case extractor. 1881 dated "SWP" cartouche on the left side of the stock. Three click tumbler. Original triangular bayonet. Comes with an original leather sling. CONDITION: Gun retains a pleasing patina overall with traces of original blue. Markings are clear. Case colors on breech block have mostly silvered, although they are still vibrant on the underside when the action is open. Wood has dings and handling marks, and a minor crack on either side at the nose. Some very minor chips out at the buttplate and a very minor crack at the top of the buttplate tang. There is a 7" long crack in the wood along the bayonet channel on the right side. Bore is good with sharp rifling and some areas of light pitting. Fine mechanical function. GR
