Standard production model 1860 Spencer carbine. This gun is accompanied by a leather cartridge box that is marked on the inside flap "E.A. GROSSMAN & CO./ NEWARK/ NJ". The box has a wood insert which held 20 cartridges, 7 period cartridges are included. Provenance, according to the consignor, is that the carbine, cartridges and cartridge box were issued to a relative from Hillsborough, NH, an officer in the 1st New Hampshire Cavalry. A limited research of the Spencer serial number suggest that it was initially issued to the 72nd Indiana Mounted Infantry, part of Col. John Wilder's "Lightening Brigade" before being reissued to the 1st NH cavalry. Wilder's Brigade is renowned for having first used the Spencer rifles and carbines in armed conflict at the battle of Hoover's Gap, Tennesse. CONDITION: Retains a pleasing patina overall showing signs of having been lightly cleaned. Some pitting. Markings on top of the receiver are worn but legible. Stocks have dings and handling marks, showing saddle wear on the left side of the butt. Cartouches appear to have been freshened. Bore has strong rifling with some pitting. Good mechanical function. Cartridge box is fine with some crazing to the outer flap. Stitching is solid, no rips or tears in leather. Markings are clear. Belt loops are intact. Cartridges have a pleasing patina to them. GR
