Out of all the Confederate Naval cutlass's, the one marked "C.S.N." such as this one here are among the most sought after. 21" blade. Cast brass hilt with feathered grip. "C.S.N." cast into one side of the pommel, with a fouled anchor on the other. Inside the guard are the Roman numerals “II” and “VI” which were crudely done. Mr. Michel’s Notes State: “Confederate States navy cutlass. This cutlass is probably the finest example of this weapon in existence. The full length, 21” blade shows only manufacturing flaws in the metal. The hilt is in flawless condition with “CSN” cast into the pommel cap. When found, the scabbard had disintegrated into fragments (probably thereby preserving the blade, but still attached was the original canvas and leather frog for the scabbard). Provenance: Ex. coll. Ralph Arnold.” The frog mentioned in Mr. Michel's notes was unfortunately sold separately and is no longer present. PROVENANCE: Ex- Ralph Arnold collection, Ex- Ben Michel collection (Morphy/Julia's Auction October 2007, lot 1178). CONDITION: One of the finer condition examples of this scarce pattern cutlass known. Blade is very fine with numerous laminated flaws visible. Hilt has a pleasing patina, possibly having been lightly cleaned at some point in the past. GR
