This hardcover scrapbook has a reattached binder. Cover is stamped "UNION SOUVENIRS 1861.". The album contains approximately 430 original and different Civil War patriotic envelope covers and a complete set of the extremely scarce Champion prize envelope "Lincoln and Davis in five rounds" published by J.H. Tingley of New York, 1861. Note states book came from Akron, Ohio area, the estate of Mrs. Winslow who was 83 years of age in 1988. These vignettes were hand cut from a multitude of Civil War patriotic envelopes that were used by loved ones to send personal letters to far-away soldiers. Each was meticulously cut and glued to the pages of this album at the time. The very first page has 6 Union State Lady Liberty seals. You will find vignettes honoring nearly all of Northern Union states, many with Union slogans such as "DEATH TO ALL TRAITORS", "THE UNION AT ALL HAZARDS", "DISUNION BY ARMED FORCE IS TREASON", "MARYLAND ON THE FENCE", "SURPRISE UPON THE REBEL SAVAGES", "SECESSION: THE CAIN OF BALTIMORE", "UNION NOW AND FOREVER", "TRUE TO THE UNION". There are also numerous Thomas Mast style cartoons, most of which lambaste Jeff Davis and the Southern Secessionists. Others glorifying Honest Abe and various Union Generals such as Colonel Ellsworth, the first great martyr assassinated in Virginia May 24, 1861. Other generals highly touted include Winfield Scott, General Butler, the Lincoln Cabinet, General McClellan. Memorials to Fort Sumpter, and many more making fun of Jeff Davis, secessionists portrayed as the Devil and hydra, deadhead bounty. Most are in red, blue, and white but several are in full color. One particularly graphic one shows dozens of men hanging from the noose titled "Capital Punishment" with the names of Davis, Beauregard and other famous Confederate generals. But the most important aspect of this one of a kind scrapbook is the Champion in Five Round fight covers that show Lincoln and Davis in a boxing match, showing old Abe as the kindly protector of the right and Davis whining sympathy; includes rounds 1 through 5, where Lincoln is awarded the Champion belt. One of a kind and very historic. One can envision the person at home delicately cutting out and affixing each and every image during the first full year of the war.
