Serial number 29720, manufactured in 1853. On page 69 of R.L. Wilson's first "Colt Engraving" book is a photograph showing an original hand written list titled "Engraved Pistols". This list is part of the official Colt Collection of Firearms then located in the Connecticut State Library. The list represents a total of 76 Colt pistols that were engraved by Gustave Young's Colt engraving shop for the month ending June 3, 1854. The very first entry under the column titled "Navy's" is serial number 29720. The subject revolver today has serial number 29720 on all its major components with exception of the wedge, which is numbered 709. 7 - 1/2" barrel marked "ADDRESS SAM'L COLT NEW-YORK CITY". Full silver plating, with checkered one piece walnut grips. Masterfully engraved in the classic Gustave Young style of Germanic scrolls with a punch dot background, featuring his trademark wolf head motif hammer and a stylized dog head on the left barrel lug and right side of the frame. Scroll engraving on the loading lever, frame, trigger guard, hammer, and backstrap. "COLTS PATENT" hand engraved in script on left side of frame. All screw heads are engraved. W.L. Ormsby's naval battle scene roll die on the cylinder. CONDITION: Fine overall, partially period refinished. Engraving shows minimum wear. Approximately 50% roll die scene is visible. Silver plating is blending with bare metal giving an overall pleasing appearance. Approximately 50% original silver plating on brass trigger guard and backstrap. Overall a most desirable and well documented factory engraved Model 1851 Navy from Gustave Young's shop. -MKS-
