1881 vintage blackpowder Colt Single Action Army, serial number 63539. Matching numbers observed on barrel under ejector housing, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, and cylinder. 7 - 1/2" barrel chambered in .45 Long Colt. Nickel with two piece ivory grips featuring a carved Phoenix motif. Inside the grip is marked "Jackson 1969". Included is a Colt Factory Archival Letter dated September 7, 2004 and signed by Kathleen Hoyt. The letter documents Colt Single Action Army Revolver, serial number 63539, as leaving the factory with blue finish, and shipped to Wexell & DeGress in Mexico City, Mexico on November 1, 1881. This revolver. along with the included collection of artifacts, is believed to have been the former property of Dick Maxwell, Dick was the son of "Horse" Maxwell. Maxwell is reported to have been the Marshall of a small South Texas town named Bluffton located south of Llano Texas. The collection was purchased from a descendant family estate. Included is a badge marked "DEPUTY MARSHALL / TEXAS", a Civil War era flap holster and belt with "U.S." marked brass buckle, along with the Maxwell family album that includes numerous interesting tintypes and other early family photos. CONDITION: Revolver is very good overall with approximately 45-50% nickel remaining with heavy flaking. Cylinder show traces of nickel, mostly a brown patina with moderate pitting. Bore is dark. Action operates properly however is weak. The holster and belt are fine with the leather being pliable showing modest crazing. The badge is excellent, with the pin having been resoldered at some point. The family album is well worn with tattered edges and a broken binding. Overall this is very colorful and interesting Western collection that deserves further research. -MKS-
