This rifle was made by Dickson, Nelson & Co under contract for the state of Alabama. It is estimated that only 645 of these rifles were delivered against a contract for 5,000. Well marked on the lock "DICKSON/ NELSON/ C.S." in the center, and "ALA./ 1865" at the tail. This gun is also marked "ALA. 1865" on the left side of the barrel. Produced at the Adairsville, Georgia factory. Brass mounted. Of note, this gun has a small "P" proof stamped into the underside of the barrel as well as what appears to be a square with a "Y" in it. The meaning of these markings is unknown as most of the time these guns are found with a small "G" and a Nathaniel Cross "windmill" inspectors stamp. This gun is undoubtedly original. The ramrod appears to be correct and original to this gun. Original leather sling, most likely of Northern origin. CONDITION: Well above average for a Confederate weapon. Retains a dark pleasing patina overall with areas of very minor pitting. There is no burn out near the nipple. The bore is very fine with sharp clean rifling and some extremely minor pitting in areas. Brass has a pleasing mellow color to it, sharp edges. Fine mechanical function. Wood has some dings and handling marks, there is a glued crack on the left side of the stock, one on the right side of the stock extending forward and up from the front of the lock, and another crack in the right side just behind the nose cap. There is some minor chipping along the ramrod channel and along the edges of the barrel channel. GR
