Maynard 2nd Model Military Carbine also known as the Model of 1863. 20" octagon to round tip-down barrel. Blade front sight and three leaf fold down rear barrel sight. Chambered in .50 caliber percussion. Loaded from the breech. Blue with case hardened frame, hammer, and serpentine lever. Plain straight grain walnut stock with U.S. Inspection cartouches on left side at the wrist. Right side of frame marked in three lines "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS." left side of frame marked in four lines "EDWARD MAYNARD/PANTENTEE/MAY27,1851/DEC.6,1859". U.S. sub-inspection stamps observed in all proper locations. Saddle ring and bar mounted to left side of frame. These carbines were issued to Union Cavalry regiments: 9th & 11th Indiana, and the 11th Tennessee. Approximately 5,000 total carbines, both 1st & 2nd models were manufactured. CONDITION: Excellent with 90-95% original blue on the barrel, some light pitting around the right side at the muzzle. Strong traces of mottled case colors on the frame and hammer. Bore is excellent and bright. Action locks up tight. Wood is excellent showing modest wear. -MKS-
