While the original contract with Eagle Manufacturing Co in Mansfield, CT called for 20,000 guns, it has been recorded that only 5,500 were actually delivered. Matching 1863 dates on the lock and barrel. Eagle on lock is very weakly stamped and hard to make out. No visible cartouches in the wood. Standard three band configuration. CONDITION: Metal surfaces were lightly cleaned some time ago, markings are clear except eagle as noted. Wood has some dings and handling marks, small period repair to the left side of the barrel tang. Bore is fine with sharp rifling. Fine mechanical function. GR
CORRECTION; After further examination, it would appear that this gun has been assembled from parts in an attempt to recreate one of the harder to find Civil War contract muskets. The 1863 date on the barrel has been re-stamped in the incorrect font and at an angle. The interior of the lockplate suggests that it was one of the many sold by Bannerman as surplus after the Civil War and was modified for use with an 1855 pattern mainspring. GR
