These interesting guns were among the first manufactured for the US Government at the outbreak of the Civil War by a private contractor. A great number of variations will be noted on Justice guns as many of them used recycled flintlock musket parts. This gun is no exception. Brass mounted with patchbox. Well marked on the top of the barrel "P.S. JUSTICE / PHILADA", marked on the lock "(eagle) / US / P.S. JUSTICE PHILADA". Has "444" stamped into the top of the barrel just behind the rear band. The front band, while of the proper style, is a possible replacement or restoration. The rear sight is most likely replaced. CONDITION: Gun retains a pleasing patina overall with some minor pitting and light rust. Markings are clear. Brass has an even, lightly cleaned color to it. Stock has dings and handling marks. There is an old repair to the toe of the stock where it was broken off and reattached. There is an old crack behind the tang. Bore has strong rifling. Fine mechanical function. GR
