This gun is one of the rare variations which features a "chain device" instead of the traditional swivel ramrod. Chain device appears to be correct, and the stock does feature an inletted retaining spring spoon to hold the ramrod. Well marked at the rear of the lock "SPRING / FIELD / 1853". Dated 1850 on the barrel tang. Brass mounted. Large sling ring bar on the left side of the gun extending from the rear band to rear of the sideplate. This gun is one of the rifled specimens which also has a 2-leaf musket style rear sight. CONDITION: Metal surfaces appear to have been lightly cleaned some time ago. Brass has a pleasing color. Wood has some dings and handling marks, no visible cartouches and some chips along the ramrod channel. Small crack at the rear of the lock cavity. Bore has good rifling. Fine mechanical function. The smaller leaf on the rear sight is broken off and missing. GR
