Made during 1863-1864 by Edward Gwyn and Abner C. Campbell in Hamilton Ohio. A total of approximately 8,200 carbines were manufactured, with approximately 4,000 being the Type II. Breechloading single shot falling block action. 20" round to octagon barrel. Heavy blade front sight and fold down ladder rear barrel sight. .52 caliber percussion. Blue with casehardened frame, lock, and hammer. Saddle ring and bar on left side of frame. Plain straight grain walnut stock with U.S. Inspection Cartouch on left side at the wrist. Lockplate marked in four lines "GWYN & CAMPBELL/PATENT/1862 / HAMILTON.O.". Front of frame marked in two lines "UNION/RIFLE". The U.S. Ordnance Department issued 13 contacts to Gwyn & Campbell for 8,202 carbines. Several Union Cavalry outfits were armed with these carbines including the 7th Tennessee, 5th & 8th Ohio, 4th & 8th Missouri, 3rd Wisconsin, 2nd & 3rd Iowa, 2nd & 3rd Arkansas, 5th, 6th, and 16th Illinois, 2nd, 6th, and 14th Kansas, 10th, 12th, and 14th Kentucky. CONDITION: Excellent with 95%+ thinning blue on barrel. Lockplate is mostly brown patina. Hammer showing 70-75% nice case color. Frame has strong traces of case color. Bore is excellent and bright. Wood is excellent showing minimum wear. Overall a high condition example of a popular American Civil War Cavalry Carbine -MKS-
